I Had A Wrench Pilot Dream

Wrench Pilot drawn by artist Mel Bend

Some of you may remember the comic that ran in Transworld for awhile called Wrench Pilot. Well I had a dream last night that I walked out my door and I was in a wrench pilot comic doing tweaked airs, crail taps, tail taps, hand plants and laid back smith grinds, just like in some of the Wrench Pilot Issues. It was such an awesome dream!

Wrench Pilot was drawn by Mel Bend and published by Transworld Skateboarding Magazine from 1989 through 1991. It was originally concepted as a piece for Thrasher Comics, but was rejected for reasons unknown. Transworld published 23 episodes of Wrench Pilot, before Bend stopped drawing it.

I found the artist Mel Bends website where you can browse all of Mel Bends artwork along with browsing all the Wrench Pilot comic issues at BendPress.com. You can even purchase some of his original artwork! Definitely worth checking out.

Are you in line for a skatepark injury?

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

We can’t prevent all accidents from happening, but we can make smart choices about how we spend our leisure time. If you’re the type of person who loves a little pavement adventure on your skateboard, you already know you can easily get hurt—if you don’t take proper precautions. But have you stopped to consider the other possible consequences of your leisure-time injuries?

According to researchers at the Center for Trauma and Injury Prevention at the University of California–Irvine, the average cost per skatepark injury is about $3,200. Medical costs are around $2,100, while lost wages run about $1,100. Adults (over age 25) miss an average of 17 days of work from skatepark injuries. One man actually lost his job because his injury prohibited him from working for weeks; subsequently, without an income, he also lost his apartment. Likewise, a piano and guitar tuner was fired for similar reasons when he fractured his forearm, the researchers report.

Before you deiced to try that 360 flip pivot to fakie on the vert extension or skip wearing a helmet and pads, consider the impact any potential injury could have on your ability to maintain an income. And don’t be one of those lame jerks who thinks that it’s OK to sue the skatepark, you may get some quick cash out of the deal but really stop and think at what cost. I’ve seen skateparks go belly up because some snot nosed kid was way out of his league and breaks something, then sues the park for all it’s worth even though he signed a release form and ignored the signs that say “Skate at Your Own Risk”. If your one of those idiots leave this page now your not welcome here.

Then again go for it and post your slam on YouTube because that seems to be the trend these days.

The moral here is look before you leap and don’t blame others for your actions.

Here’s a nice little flick created by Dan Wolfe. I remember when this video first came out on DVD it really exploded the east coast skateboarding scene!
