Ahh Spring!
For those of you blessed with good weather all year around you may not know the profound effect winter and bad weather in general plays on the skateboarders mind and body. We crave and pray for the good weather and when it arrives we do not take it for granted. The months of confinement build up and the list of tricks one plans to try quickly builds from watch countless hours of skate videos.
We twitch and squirm for good weather and we wait... and wait... hang out with some chic... and wait... get drunk... and wait some more... Watch some skate videos... and wait some more. Until finally old man winter leaves town and we are free again.
I still remember the days of walking miles and miles to skate in the local parking garages with grocery bags on our feet to keep our shoes dry, the small patch of sheltered concrete, or if you were really lucky the neighborhoods tiny garage ramp thats like 2 feet tall with no flat bottom because there was no room for it. Venturing hundreds of miles on wintry hazardous road trips to get to the closest skatepark. The worst is the endless wiping of the shoes like you stepped in the biggest pile of dog shit ever.
When it does get nice outside we don't cry about all the gravel, salt and cinders all over the ground, hell we skate right over it. And we don't bitch because our favorite skate spot is a little wet, we dry it. And we sure as hell don't wine because 50 degrees is too cold to skate, we are out in a t-shirt and shorts.
Where am I going with this you may ask! No where really, I guess I realize that being denied the things you love, at least for me, make me a better skater at heart. Because it is so true that you don't no what you have until it's gone. So for all you skaters that can relate. What are you waiting for? It's finally nice outside so quit slappin the salami and go skate!
